Cyprien Méré is a mining engineer who has no fortune but is clearly destined to have a brilliant career. While he is in South Africa for scientific research, he falls in love with Alice Watkins, the daughter of the owner of one of the richest diamond mines in the region. Since John Watkins wants his daughter to marry a rich man, Cyprien comes up with the idea of making a rhinestone and getting rich quick.
