Staging Capital

While each crisis shows that the structure of global capitalism exceeds the understanding of those who claim to direct it, it brings Marx's Capital back to the agenda. Attempting to portray this complex entity that "transcends" its own contradictions and crises only by expanding them, Marx keeps up with the structure he examines while constructing his work: Each element of capital is treated as a problem in itself, each characteristic feature revealed is turned into another puzzle to be solved, It presents a text in which concepts are constantly in motion. So much so that it is possible to claim, like Ernst Mandel, that today's capitalism is "much closer to the 'abstract' model in Capital than the 'concrete' capitalism of 1867, when Marx finished the revisions of Volume One."

In Staging Capital, Fredric Jameson both re-examines the discussions on the work and attempts a new translation process while remaining faithful to the text, and draws striking conclusions that Capital is actually a book on unemployment: "Each stage of capitalism is related to its essence and structure, on the one hand. While it is harmonious (profit motive, accumulation, expansion and exploitation of wage labor), it also points to a transformation in culture and daily life, social institutions and human relations. A creative reading of Capital today can be seen as a kind of translation process.
