Current standard narratives of Ottoman, Balkan, and Middle Eastern history emphasize the role of nationalism in the transformation of the region. Anscombe argues that, in fact, religious affiliations were the most effective element shaping social identity during the Ottoman period, that religion shaped the relationship between state and society, and that it still continues to do so in the lands once occupied by the Ottomans. To illustrate this argument, the book examines the fundamental transformations of the 19th century and the post-Ottoman independence period.
