The striking global transformation experienced in the last thirty years has also made traditional gender roles questionable. As women's labor force participation rate increases worldwide, the situation of women's employment in different societies has begun to be re-examined. The present study reviews the general course of women's employment in five Mediterranean countries and answers important questions regarding this field. The study, which addresses the similarities as well as the economic and social differences of Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey and Egypt, offers a broader analysis framework with a critical approach to the existing literature.

The experts who contributed to the study compiled by Ayşe Buğra and Yalçın Özkan place their examples in a broad Mediterranean context, comparatively addressing various social transformations and their societal consequences, which are generally discussed from different perspectives for the developed Western and developing Southern countries. This approach reveals how the results of economic development and structural transformations on women's employment interact with other factors, and how the cultural and institutional environment of gender relations is shaped by the dynamics of political change. The Course of Women's Employment in the Mediterranean remains stable even though the world system is going through intense change. A work that is descriptive about the position of the woman who is trying to be kept and offers important clues about the future.
