The Devil Within Us
In Sabahattin Ali's novel The Devil Within Us, first of all, a sad young love story is told. The love of Ömer and conservatory student Macide, who cannot establish a balance between what he says and what he does and who experiences fluctuations under the influence of the "demon within him", is depicted together with the hopes, expectations and political tendencies of the youth of the period. In the background of the stage, there are powerful people, including professors, writers and poets, who are stationed in university circles and high positions with the resources of the state. The novel, which attracted reactions from Turkist circles due to its strong criticism of Turanism, also caused controversy in the intellectual public due to its emphasis on intellectuals pursuing position and wealth.
Pointing out that "the devil within us" feeds on helplessness, laziness, ignorance and, more importantly, "the habit of avoiding seeing the truth", Sabahattin Ali confronts us with the sides we do not want to see in his novel The Devil Within Us, as in his other works. It shows the evil that sprouts and develops in life and the dynamics of this evil that has become ordinary.
The Devil Within Us is a unique novel that still leaves its mark today with its topicality of the problems it discusses, its psychological analyzes pointing to the source of evil, and its vivid character descriptions.
