The Journey of the Elephant is the story of an elephant and its poor caregiver, Subhro, who set out from the westernmost part of Continental Europe, from Lisbon to Vienna, and this strange journey. In this most entertaining novel of José Saramago, the virtue of elephant trainer Subhro, his pacifist philosophy and the naturalness of his view of life, and Solomon's nature that does not accept orders, determine the rhythm of the journey and lead to changes in people's souls.
