The End of Agriculture as We Know It

The agricultural problem (die Agrarfrage) has been one of the most important areas of discussion in politics and social sciences since the beginning of the 20th century. It lost momentum and changed shape in the intellectual climate of the 1980s and turned into a completely different discussion under "urban" titles such as "hormonal vegetables", "natural nutrition", "permaculture"; Instead of production and producers, issues related to food and consumption took the top spot on the agenda. The problems of small production, the reflections of "casino capitalism" in the countryside, the changing social structure of the village, forms of proletarianization and the internationalization of agriculture could not find a place in these "urban" discussions.

The End of Agriculture as We Know It "re-addresses" the problem of agriculture along with the economic processes that produce global power regimes. In this work, which is the product of a joint work of more than 10 years, Çağlar Keyder and Zafer Yenal discuss the agricultural problem and the transformation of rural structures in the context of commodification, dispossession of peasants and politics.

It is impossible not to take into account what is happening in agriculture and rural areas in order to meaningfully talk about many important issues such as poverty, regional inequalities, environment, social policies and social movements both in the world and in Turkey. The End of Agriculture as We Know It explains the fruitfulness of thinking and discussing the agricultural problem without being trapped in organic market romance or village nostalgia.
