
The Fool of Politeness
Molière [Jean-Baptiste Poquelin] (1622-1673): He took Latin and Greek language and literature courses at Clermont College. He studied law and left the bar, to which he was admitted, in 1641. He devoted his time and genius to theatre. He wrote, directed and took part in theater plays until his death, that is, for thirty years. He managed to create a tradition that allows him to be considered the founder of classical French comedy. When Süleyman Ağa, who came to Paris as the ambassador of Mehmet IV and was welcomed with a magnificent ceremony, did not show the expected interest in the magnificence of the French palace, XIV. To take revenge for this indifference, Louis orders a play from Molière. The result is an entertaining satire that ends with a ridiculous Turkish ballet. Describing the hopeless and ridiculous struggle of the bourgeois Monsieur Jourdain to become a nobleman, XIV. The Politeness Fool, which earned the title of the Molière play that made Louis Louis laugh the most, was first performed in Chambord on 14 October 1670, and in the presence of the king in the palace on 28 November of the same year.
