The Great Stranger
It has always been stimulating and exciting for philosophers to think about literature. Foucault, who we know to be a good reader of literature and whose agile language he uses in his books is immediately noticeable, deals with three of the issues that preoccupied him the most in the 1960s in these newly published speeches: language, madness and literature. After focusing on the intersection of madness with language and literature in the first speech, in the second speech he examines the relationship of literature and literary works with language with a philosophical method - inspired by the structuralists' method but also approaching it critically - and points out the issues waiting to be researched on the horizon of literary criticism. In the third talk, after researching the basis of the truth claim in Sade's fictional texts, he focuses on the relationship between theoretical speeches and fictional scenes in his works and examines the literary and philosophical function of these speeches. As in his other books, these texts are full of clever ideas, observations and criticisms and are for those who like to read Foucault. It promises an enjoyable read for those who care about the effort to approach literature with philosophy.
