The Hidden Face of Eve was first published in Arabic in 1977, with an English translation released in 1980. The book was an immediate success and became one of the major textbooks on women's studies in Arab society. Since then, Arab women have distinguished themselves in the international arena and have made significant progress towards improving their status in society. But unfortunately, many of the issues brought up by Nawal es-Sadevi in his book still remain valid today. For this very reason, reading the book is as necessary today as it was thirty years ago.

The Hidden Face of Eve is a turning point in Nevâl es-Sâdevî's oeuvre and his first meeting with a Western readership. The book was met with tremendous outrage in the Arab world. Critics of the author lashed out at her, claiming that her portrayal of Arab women reinforces stereotypes and prejudices about the Arab world. He became an object of hatred for the so-called “guardians of morality” and was constantly subjected to death threats and harassment. Arab women and women around the world owe a lot to Nawal al-Sadevi's defiance of convention and extraordinary courage.
