The Road After the Structure
“I have argued that the challenge in the historical philosophy of science is to undermine the pillars on which the authority of scientific knowledge was previously thought to rest, by basing itself on observations of the historical record and without providing anything to replace it.
The two most prominent pillars in my mind are: first, the facts said to provide evidence are prior to and independent of beliefs; Secondly, what emerges through the practice of science are truths, possible truths, or approximate truths about an external world independent of mind and culture.”
It is his work that the concept of "paradigm" has spread beyond the scientific-theoretical world: Thomas Kuhn's book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, published in 1962, brought "fame" to this concept, which defines the point of view and way of thinking. The book you have in your hand reflects the interesting inquiries of Kuhn, who continues to think about the hypotheses in this groundbreaking work.
There are articles in the book that open the philosophy of science to a wide horizon of curiosity: "What is" the progress of science and how does it happen? What does the fact that science is a “social enterprise” tell us? What can we learn from the similarities between scientific progress and evolutionary biological development? How can the issues of "incommensurability" and "comparability, communicability", which create communication difficulties between different languages, be addressed?
Additionally, a long and sincere interview with Thomas Kuhn about his life story and intellectual adventure contributes to drawing the portrait of an exceptional scientist.
A resource and guidebook on the meaning of science and the method of science.
