The Secret History of Byzantium - Hasan Ali Yücel Classics
Byzantine history is an inexhaustible source of topics for writers. There is no doubt that this history is full of intrigues, wars, power struggles, and bloody subterfuges. But we see Procopius as the only historian who takes us to Byzantine history in a transparent way. Procopius, who lived in the most glorious period of Byzantine history, during the reign of Emperor Justinianus and Empress Theodora, witnessed the inner face of every event in Byzantium, both as the official palace historian and by serving in important positions. The "Secret History", which he wrote to be disclosed after his death, must probably be one of the most interesting histories of all time. As a result, we can clearly learn what is happening within the Byzantine Empire with all its transparency.
In the preface of the book, the author states that he had great difficulty in preparing the Secret History and says: "When I try to examine indescribable and extremely surprising people like Justinian and Theodaora and the lives they lived, my teeth shake with fear."
But Procopius still leaves aside the illegal pressures, the flocks of spies behind him, and the fear of facing death at any moment, and writes his "Secret History". Thus, we obtain a unique work of an exemplary historian.
