The Story of the Eye, surreptitiously published by Georges Bataille under the pen name Lord Auch in 1928, is a part of the history of 20th century literature. It is one of the most contradictory texts. This text, which has been the subject of countless evaluations and has been studied by different disciplines from literary criticism to philosophy, from psychoanalysis to cinema, is the expression of Battaile's aesthetic understanding: a short novel free from Romanesque and psychological interpretation. This erotica, which has also been adapted to cinema, is an aesthetic, ecstatic and "inappropriate" masterpiece in which pain, violence, death and the sanctity of sexuality are intertwined.
