When the Theological-Political Treatise was written more than three hundred years ago, it was called "the book written by the Jew who denies his religion with the devil in hell." Today, he may encounter similar criticisms, albeit with different words. Perhaps what is significant is that the book that has received the most criticism in the history of thought is an uncompromising defense of freedom of expression and democracy, from the first line to the last line. Spinoza had said centuries ago that democracy cannot be talked about without removing the limits imposed on freedom of expression in the name of religion or the state, and that democracy is the regime most suitable for human nature and that the real purpose of a democratic political whole is freedom. And that questioning the modern mentality, while saving humanity from slavery, does not mean falling into religious slavery this time...

The Theological-Political Treatise is based on the French translation by Jacqueline Lagrée and Pierre-François Moreau (1999), which is based on the Latin Fokke Akkerman edition. Additionally, Charles Appuhn's now classic French translation was also consulted for comparison. The text was edited by comparison with the Spanish translation by Atilano Dominguez, the German by Carl Gebhardt, revised by Günter Gawlick, and the English translation by Michael Silverthorne and Jonathan Israel. In order to cover the concepts used by Spinoza in a consistent and complete way, the original Latin text was also used.
