Theseus

Theseus is a short novel written by André Gide, inspired by Greek mythology. Gide, who does not pursue complete historical compatibility, shows once again that myths are open to various interpretations.

Gide, through Theseus's mouth, describes the different periods of the great hero's life, the loves he experienced, the heroism he showed, how he used cunning when necessary as he ran from adventure to adventure. It tells how he acted and revived Athens, the center of reason. Meanwhile, Gide's voice mixes with the voice of his hero at times... I have completed my destiny. I leave the city state of Athens behind me. I loved Athens more than my wife and son. I made it my own city. After I am gone, my thoughts will live there eternally.
