Tolstoy
Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828-1910) is one of the greatest writers of the novel and one of the most influential intellectuals in history. Apart from this, titles such as anarchist thinker, revolutionary educator, ardent philanthropist, war correspondent, expert farmer, beekeeper, and even prophet can easily be attributed to him. During his long life, he not only wrote, but also, for example, started a fight against the terrible famine in Russia; He challenged injustice, militarism, the tsarist regime and the church, and by opposing authority and all kinds of oppressive regimes, he inspired leaders such as Gandhi and Martin Luther King who would change the course of history. In this striking biography of Tolstoy, Rosamund Bartlett follows in the footsteps of a giant who could not even fit into the vast Russian lands. By portraying Tolstoy in a picture of Russia in which the Tsarist regime is in shaky condition and religious institutions are collapsing, he discusses his novels, thoughts, beliefs and views such as "passive resistance" in this context. In addition, he makes use of the Soviet Union Archives, which were recently opened to the public, and reveals brand new and striking information about "Tolstoyism" as a doctrine. It reveals the history of the "Tolstoyism" doctrine, which deeply affected the contemporary understanding of ecology, the search for a life in harmony with nature, the role it played in the Bolshevik revolution, and how it came to these days - despite all the oppression and massacre its followers experienced.
“It portrays Tolstoy much more vividly than any of the biographies I have read… We feel like we are in the presence of a huge personality at every period of Tolstoy's life… Bartlett patiently weaves each scene delicately while bringing the smell of the Russian soil and meadows to our noses.”-AN Wilson, Financial Times-
“18. "A fluent and intelligently told story of Russia's social and cultural history from the end of the century to the 20th century... Bartlett's simple and subtle style makes itself felt throughout the book."-Mary Dejevsky, Independent -
“A magnificent book, full of new details and written in a fluent style. "It deals with the greatest of Russian writers from a different perspective."-Jay Parini, author of The Last Station-
