Tolstoy's interest in theater coincided with the period when he was searching for a transition point between historical novel and epic in literature.
He started writing his first play right when he was working on War and Peace; The first theater play that remained unpublished is Bozuk Aile, dated 1864. Other plays included in this book are The First Master Distiller (1886), The Power of Darkness (1886), The Fruits of Enlightenment (1886-1889), And the Light Shines in the Dark (1890), Pyotr the Baker (1894) and the posthumous The Living Corpse (1900). The plays named are Tolstoy's successful, accepted and staged works in the theater for many years.
