Trade and State on the Danube

According to a significant majority of Western-based academic studies examining the Ottoman Danube, the region was cut off from world trade during the time the Danube River remained under Ottoman rule, and even the Ottomans made no effort to revive trade here. Questioning the historical reality of these theses is the subject of this review.
Did the Ottomans really fail to see the commercial capacity of this region, were unable to benefit from this river commercially, and did the time spent under Ottoman rule become the lost years of this region? However, the Danube Piers hosted large-scale local and interregional domestic trade and international trade. This structure, which was a source of vitality for both the Ottoman country, the Balkan geography and neighboring countries, was maintained by the Ottomans for centuries.

In this study prepared in the light of archive documents on the Ottoman economic mentality and economic system, the Ottoman Danube is discussed in terms of trade through the lower Danube piers and hinterland, the goods subject to trade, the direction, structure and actors of trade. It traces the economic changes and transformations that took place in the 19th century, when the effects of the Industrial Revolution were seen in world economic history, modern economies were systematized and traditional economies faced this challenge.
