Travel in My Room Night Expedition in My Room
Xavier de Maistre, who served in the army in 1790, was sentenced to forty-two days of house arrest. As a result of this house arrest, a legendary, funny and entertaining story, Travel in My Room, emerged. De Maistre must have been so pleased with this trip that he later wrote the second volume of the book, Night Expedition in My Room. In these books, for example, one can travel to the sofa, the largest piece of furniture in the room, without needing a suitcase, go to the window at night and look at the sky, and its features are discovered again and in a completely different way. What is really discovered is the unimportance of the point reached in the journey and the importance of the understanding and perception of the person making the journey.
De Maistre proposes a different, deep and suggestive re-conception on ordinary things...
The late 18th century is the period when modernity (or more accurately, modernities) began. Sterne, Diderot, Rousseau... Among the writers who easily became stars of this bright period, Xavier de Maistre is still waiting to be discovered or rediscovered. His great work, Travel in My Room, is one of the liveliest, most original autobiographical narratives ever written.
