Turkey Diary 1577 - 1578 (Volume 2) Book Description Stephan Gerlach came to Istanbul in 1573 as the preacher of the embassy delegation, together with the Austrian ambassador. His diary was published in Frankfurt in 1674 by his grandson, Samuel Gerlach. This work, which has now been translated into Turkish exactly 332 years later, is a very important source for the 16th century Ottoman-Turkish world. Gerlach, who carefully observed the lives of the Muslim and non-Muslim people of Istanbul, gave important information especially about the ruler, dynasty, palace and pashas who constituted the government. He witnessed that all languages were written and spoken not only in the foreign communities in Galata, but also in the pens of the Imperial Council. In his diary, Gerlach also describes the entertainments in Atmeydani, the reception of foreign delegations, Ramadan invitations, funeral processions, weddings, Muharram-Aşura-Nevruz celebrations, Hıdrellez and Amin Processions, markets where a thousand different goods are sold, and dolphins wandering in flocks. People walk around in colorful and diverse clothes. Sometimes, heavenly events that can only be seen once a century occur in the city. According to Gerlach's statement, an "Arab astrologer" predicted the comet that appeared on November 11, 1577 and informed the Sultan. The astrologer mentioned by Gerlach is Takiyüddin Efendi, the founder of the first Observatory... In that period, Istanbul was inhabited by people who freed the birds, fed the cats and dogs on the streets, even established a foundation for this purpose, and threw the fish they caught back into the sea as a reward.
