İki Osmanlı Liman Kenti
This book is about the history of Izmir and Thessaloniki, which came under Ottoman rule at almost the same time. Izmir sometimes became "infidel", sometimes "little Paris of the East" or a princess. This city, whose "streets smell of both girls and the sea", was also the city left behind by imperialism that flowed into the sea from Smyrna. Actually, Izmir was all of these.
Thessaloniki, named after the sister of Alexander the Great, transformed from a Byzantine city into an Ottoman city, but became more of a Jewish city. As a center of attraction in the 17th century. For a long period, Thessaloniki lived alone with its own responsibilities in its "White Tower", compared to Izmir, whose star shined in the 21st century and had high self-confidence. The city, under the shadow of the Ottoman capital, dates back to the 19th century. It was able to keep up with the winds of change that came with the century. In fact, as capitalist relations in the city intensified, it became an attractive port city for European countries and the most important center of Balkan nationalist organizations and ideals.
This book is about the two port cities of the Ottoman Empire, Izmir and Thessaloniki, in the 17th century. From the second half of the century to the 19th century. Its socioeconomic development in the 20th century. It emerged as a product of the effort to compare and make sense of how one city became a Turkish city and the other a Greek city, emerging from the flames of the century and the historical process behind all of these.
