When Fyodor Dostoyevsky was exiled to Siberia in 1850 on the grounds that he participated in a movement opposing the oppressive rule of Tsarism, he had gained a respected place in literary circles with his works such as The Little Ones, The Twins, and White Nights. The novel Uncle's Dream is a work of return to literature that Dostoyevsky wrote after completing his painful five-year exile sentence.
