Peasants Book Description The Peasants is the last novel of Honoré de Balzac, the master writer of realistic literature, which he describes as "the greatest of the books I have decided to write", but says that it took him eight years to have the courage to write "all these details that make up this terrible and bloody drama". Peasants takes place in a countryside called Aigues, in the Burgundy region of France. Aigues, which was sold after the death of the property owner, was purchased by Count Montcornet, a former Imperial general. But neither the peasants accept it nor Count Montcornet allows the peasants to continue the old order. Thus, a struggle begins: This is a class struggle and a land fight in the triangle of aristocracy, bourgeoisie and peasant people. The Peasants, the last book of Balzac's "Human Comedy", is a profound work that presents scenes from the provincial life of Restoration period France. In this work, which he himself describes as a "social drama", the author approaches the issue like a historian and makes important determinations about the sociological and ideological situation of the period.
