Halkın Sesi
In his novel, in which his heroes struggle with their weaknesses, talents, ambitions, loves, sexual preferences, and come to terms with their personal histories, and in the end they stand naked as mere humans, Jean Vautrin describes the beating heart of the Paris Commune. He takes us around the streets.
... "Marseillaise" was blasting in the air over and over again. Even though it is heard very often, this spiteful anthem was so impressive when it was sung in unison by thousands of determined voices! It was a magnificent power that raised the people who were destined to misery, despised and humiliated, to their feet again, and gave them the strength to conquer the streets with a universal shout, just when they were about to fall into submission!...
"Long live the Commune!"
Social layers were completely mixed together, rows intertwined, squeezing each other in an irregular manner, people were filling their lungs with air and shouting together, with an unprecedented common spirit. The crowds were still flowing. Almost everyone except those who were coming was already there. They believed that the day was the people's day. They were proletarians with clean eyes, blackened nails, and faces shining with joy. They were flowing, flowing, swarming.
Those coming from the neighborhoods and factories... Clusters of people... Girls hugging the statues, children climbing the lampposts... Those sitting on top of the statues, those hanging from the roofs... Cripples, rabble-rousers, old men, street children. , workers in blue shirts, petty bourgeois in frock coats... Lots of people of all ages and types filled the area to the brim. The cannons exploding, spraying small white smoke into the huge clear sky, announced that the military regiment would arrive there soon...
As the Paris Commune and the class reality are revealed in all their simplicity, we hear the voices of those who created the Commune.
