Waiting for Rain

The Free Fikra experiment that ended the first phase of the founding period of the Republic of Turkey... The great economic depression of 1929 and the danger of severe drought that accompanied it. Sheikh Sait and the first Dersim rebellions were suppressed, all kinds of opposition were crushed and dispersed with Takrir-i Sükun laws, and "Atatürk revolutions" came into force. In Waiting for Rain, while Tarik Bugra deals with the results and reflections of all these developments in the Anatolian provinces on the axis of the Free Fikra attempt, he actually makes a balance sheet of the ten-year Republic. Hints of the movement that would bring DP to victory in 1946-50, the socio-politics and psychology of the concepts of state, democracy, party... of the right/conservative mentality at the center of this movement, the very realistic and lively rural characters and dialogues of Waiting for Rain. It has been sprinkled into it very skillfully. In this form, this book can be read not only as a view of rural Turkey before the closure of Serbest Fikra, but also as a right-wing/conservative view of Turkey before the coups.
