Richard Adams was born in Berkshire in 1920. He studied history at Oxford and worked for the Ministry of the Environment. The books Watership Hill, Shardik and The Plague Dogs attracted great attention from readers. When it was published in 1976 , Watership Hill became a modern classic and won the Carnegie Medal. Adams, who was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Winchester, passed away in 2016.
