Ways of Seeing
Seeing came before speaking. The child learns to look and recognize before he starts talking.
However, in another sense, seeing came before words. We are found by seeing our place in the world that surrounds us. We describe this world with words, but words can never change the fact that we are surrounded by the world. We see the sun set every evening.
We know that the earth is turning its back to the sun. However, this information, this explanation never fits what we see. Surrealist painter Magritte commented on this gap that always exists between words and objects in his painting "The Key to Dreams".
