What If I Don't Exist? A Journey through the Labyrinth of the Self is an amazing study that investigates the human perception of self in the light of the latest neuroscience research on various diseases such as schizophrenia, autism, Alzheimer's, epilepsy, and Cotard syndrome.

Combining his extensive research on these disorders and his interviews with patients, Anil Ananthaswamy offers a new perspective that will radically change the way we think about the self. While one patient amputates his leg, which he thinks is redundant, another feels integrated with the universe. These people, who have lost much of their past identities due to their illnesses, reveal through sometimes surprising and sometimes sad experiences that the self continues to exist with those left behind.

Thanks to what we have learned about the self today, we know that there is no distinction between mind and body. So, where exactly does the self reside? in the brain, mind or body? What If I Don't Exist? A Journey through the Labyrinth of the Self presents the findings of neuroscience regarding our perception of self in a colorful narrative.

Anil Ananthaswamy is a consultant for New Scientist magazine. He is a visiting editor for the science writing program at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and teaches science journalism at the National Center for Biological Sciences in Bangalore, India. Winner of the UK Physics Institute's Physics Journalism Award and the British Science Writers' Association's Best Investigative Journalist award, Ananthaswamy's first book, The Edge of Physics, was chosen as the book of the year by Physics World in 2010. Ananthaswamy lives in Bangalore, India, and Berkeley, California.
