Kadın Antroropolojisi
This work, compiled by Rayna R. Reiter, takes its roots from the women's movement and resorts to the possibilities of anthropology to define and explain the equality and inequality between the genders.
Anthropology, which focuses on "other" cultures and intercultural differences and similarities that many disciplines focusing on "modern" societies are not interested in/ignore, offers us insightful information about the origins and functions of family systems, gender roles and how gender is shaped. However, some assumptions (about the position of women) underlying anthropological research raise questions about the discipline. Along with anthropologists who preferred to study culture directly through biology, there were also anthropologists who claimed that women's role in reproduction was the first responsible for the division of labor and that male dominance emerged from this division. But feminists wanted to know why this happened. Mainstream classical anthropology, on the other hand, has either remained closed to the real questions asked by feminist students or has tended to trivialize them.
In this review, the reader will be presented with discussions on "the development of gender differences", "male bias in anthropology", "origin of the family", "matriarchy", "political economy of gender", as well as discussions from Papua New Guinea to the Dominican Republic in the context of the above questions and problems. With examples from different cultures, from Spanish villages to rural Colombia, from Nigeria to rural China, information about the positioning of gender equality and inequality, filtered through extensive field research, is presented. In addition, the studies on the subject of thinkers such as Morgan, Engels, Freud, Levi-Staruss, who are considered to be pioneers in their fields, were re-examined and subjected to serious criticism from a feminist perspective, and methodological clues were given to researchers for new studies.
