Sixth Ward
In this novella set in a mental hospital in a provincial town, Chekhov focuses on the philosophical conflict between Ivan Dmitrich, an educated patient, and Doctor Andrey Yefimych. While Ivan Dmitrich objects to the injustice they are subjected to and the terrible conditions they are forced to live in, Andrey Yefimych insists on ignoring these and does not lift a finger to change the situation. When the doctor finally realizes the “philosophical” error he has fallen into, it is too late. Ward Six is almost a symbol of the “madness” of the elite Russian intellectuals who prefer to watch the problems of Russia and the country from a distance rather than deal with them. Ward Six attracted great attention when it was published in the November 1892 issue of Russkaya Misl magazine. It is even said that Lenin was horrified after reading the work, saying, “I felt as if I were in the Sixth Ward.”
