Glass Bees
Richard, once a cavalry captain but now penniless, enlists the help of his army friend Twinnings to find work. But times have changed: tanks have replaced horses, and businessmen have replaced heroic soldiers. Fortunately, Twinnings arranges for Richard to meet with Zapparoni, a mysterious inventor and businessman. Zapparoni has enormous power in many areas, from automaton manufacturing to the film industry, and he needs someone like Richard for some jobs. The meeting will take place in Zapparoni's mansion, which is both full of technological wonders and completely integrated with nature.
While Richard wonders why such a powerful and intelligent man wants to meet him, he also realizes the mystery of this magical place he has come to: This is the encounter of the new world of technology and a soldier's old world.
Among the best of its kind with its dystopian fiction, philosophical depth and power to depict the trauma experienced by the human soul when it encounters the new world, The Glass Bees (1957) is also a novel of a prophet's astonishing predictions.
Mert Moralı translated this extraordinary work by Ernst Jünger, one of the most controversial and original writers of twentieth-century German literature, from the original German.
