Dokuzuncu Hariciye Koğuşu

One of Peyami Safa's masterpieces, Dokuzuncu Hariciye Koğuşu, has an important place in Turkish literature as it is the "first novel that wanders into the depths and labyrinths of the human soul" and deals with a sick person and his psychology. The Ninth Foreign Ward, which is considered a first in Turkish literature by many researchers and writers, is, as Tanpınar said, "the only book of pain and suffering", a powerful work that can be shown as evidence of the existence of the Turkish novel, even if there is no other work in terms of both quantity and quality. The young hero of the novel sees countless doctors to get rid of his foot disease and is eventually convinced that he needs to spend a period of rest in an airy environment, away from stress. However, his consciousness is shaped in an atmosphere of disaster, both when he stays as a guest in the mansion of a relative of his, a Pasha, in Erenköy, and during his visits to and from his own house and the hospital. The novel, which bears traces of Peyami Safa's childhood and youth periods, offers a unique description of man in terms of being able to fit both hope and despair, joy and disaster into the same pages.
