Ethnic and Religious Minorities
Back Cover Article (From the Promotional Bulletin)
Professor Baskin Oran, who has been dealing with nationalism since 1969 and the issue of minorities since 1974, in this extensive work, firstly explains the history of the concept of minority from past to present like a documentary film. It reveals the approaches of international organizations such as the League of Nations, the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the OSCE and the European Union to this thorny issue in the light of treaties, conventions and declarations. Then, he touches upon the concept's history, theory, law, and practices in the world and Türkiye, one by one. He gives all the discussions on the subject with applied concepts such as assimilation, ethnic cleansing and self-determination.
This book does not only discuss the experience of Turkey, where "minority rights" wrongly refers only to non-Muslim rights, from the perspective of non-Muslims such as Armenians, Jews/Jews, Greeks and Assyrians. In addition, by applying international standards, it examines the rights of Alevis and Kurds by examining Turkish legislation and jurisprudence. It explains legal regulations and practices on issues such as identity politics, hate speech and discrimination with case studies. Then, it reveals with a comparative method what reforms Turkey carried out on the threshold of the European Union and how they suffered major ruptures during the 2016 State of Emergency period.
This study, which deals with the issue of minorities in Turkey, which is not familiar with international standards, with an interdisciplinary approach in the fields of history, political science, sociology and law, does not only have the quality of a textbook. It will take its place in the literature as a work that sheds light on the past and present, and that every reader who thinks about domestic and foreign policy can easily benefit from.
