Halep’te İlmi Hayat
During the Mamluk period, Aleppo was the second important center of science after the capital Cairo and Damascus. The majority of the madrasahs operating in Aleppo during this period were taken over from the Zengids and Ayyubids. Although other sciences were also included in the curriculum, fiqh was taught intensively in public madrasahs. There were also specialized madrasahs called dârülkur'an, dârülhadis, bîmâristân. While in the first two courses were given entirely for specialization, in bîmâristans both practical treatment was applied and medical science was taught to the students practically. The Mamluk period had a very lively and important feature in terms of scientific life. Many scientific works that we frequently refer to in different fields today were compiled during this time. Ulama from Aleppo or those who studied in Aleppo also made significant contributions to the world of science. The present study provides information about the scientific institutions operating in Aleppo during the period in question and the leading Aleppo scholars in various branches of science.
