Herakles - Hasan Ali Classics Book Description

Euripides (c. 484-406 BC): He has a special place as the artist whose most works have survived to the present day among the three great tragic poets produced by Athens. This feature is attributed to the fact that he was a more admired poet among the public, even though he did not win the first prize as much as Aeschylus and Sophocles at the festivals. Euripides' heroes have human weaknesses and flaws, and the tragedies they experience arise from these flaws and their passions that they cannot give up. Euripides can be considered the first of the classical or modern poets who produced works closest to contemporary theater. In Herakles, Euripides emphasizes the tragic aspect of life and the changeability of fate by telling how the mythological hero suddenly loses everything while his fame and power are at their peak.

The play also inspired the tragedy Hercules Furens (Hercules Going Wild), one of Seneca's most important works.
