counterfeiters
The setting of André Gide's The Counterfeiters in the twentieth-century French novel can only be compared to that of Marcel Proust's Behind Lost Time. Just like Proust's great work, The Forgers, which is the only work Gide calls a novel among all the narratives he wrote, wants to be both a novel, a reflection on the novel, a work that tells stories, and the story of the work. Another aim he tries to achieve while doing this is to completely renew the art of the novel. It is difficult to say that this last goal has been fully achieved. But the search is continued through such a masterful expression, such lively and attractive faces, and such interesting events that, on the one hand, we feel that we are in the presence of a great literary adventure, and on the other hand, we experience the adventures of the people as if they were our own.
