The magic word of the new economic order is what is the nature of change; How does it reflect on people? How can one have permanent values and goals in an economy that is always focused on the short term? How can a person create his own identity and life story in institutions that are constantly falling apart or constantly being restructured? Although many books have been published examining the phenomenon of globalization at the macro level, the micro level of this process and its effects on human character have been rarely examined. Richard Sennett does this in "Character Corrosion". According to him, capital has no other purpose than quick profit in the wavy seas of today's economy spread all over the world; it makes its companies flexible and restructures to intervene in instant changes in the market. People are required to constantly renew themselves, to be mobile, to take risks. However, when we look closely at this policy, which is defended against the routine and monotonous structure of the old capitalism, it is seen that flexibility only changes the color of the old power structures for employees and the loss of life-long job security. Losing the sense of direction by constantly changing jobs and cities; giving way to temporary projects and the feeling of insecurity and indifference fueled by competition, fed by life particles drifting from one job to another, from yesterday to tomorrow... And also the erosion of character... However, human character, emotional It develops through the long-term nature of our experiences and the ethical values we attach to our relationships with others. Character manifests itself in inner integrity, interdependence in relationships, and striving for a long-term goal. New capitalism, on the other hand, does not find it profitable to trust, connect and make long-term plans and rejects them. In "Character Corrosion", Sennett looks at the lives of those who eat the bread rather than the quality of the bread produced with advanced computers and asks: Does this system add value and meaning to people's lives? And he adds: Change flourishes in the soil, among people who share their needs with each other, not in mass uprisings. I am sure that a regime that makes people careless cannot maintain its legitimacy for long. Sennett argues convincingly that the increasing insecurity experienced by workers makes the formation of a moral identity impossible... The Erosion of Character is an excellent synthesis of keen empirical observation and intense ethical debate. -Richard Rorty , Stanford University-Sennett's striking book that penetrates the reader, deals with the transition to flexible and unstable employment... The author wants us to evaluate the issue of companies' packaging becoming treacherous while becoming stylish. -Robert M. Solow, Massachusetts Institute of Technology-
