Kierkegaard wrote in his diary in 1849: "When I die, Fear and Trembling will be enough to earn me the glory of being an immortal writer: it will be read after me and translated into foreign languages. The reader will be entranced by the enthusiastic expression in the book."

This particular prediction was largely confirmed, and Kierkegaard's Fear and Trembling, published in 1843 under the pseudonym Johannes de Silentio, became one of his most read and best-known books.
