Kyklops-Hasan Ali Yücel Classics (Hardcover Book)
Euripides (c. 484-406 BC): He has a special place as the artist whose most works have survived to the present day among the three great tragic poets produced by Athens. This feature is attributed to the fact that he was a more admired poet among the public, even though he did not win the first prize as much as Aeschylus and Sophocles at the festivals. The heroes of Euripides' plays have human weaknesses and flaws, and the tragedies they experience arise from these flaws and their passions that they cannot give up. Euripides can be considered the first of the classical or modern poets who produced works closest to contemporary theater. Kyklops is the only satyrikon drama that has survived in full. Satyrikon drama, which is followed after the tragedy trilogy and aims to relax the audience with its comic content, is generally a short play with a simple plot. The Cyclops theme, which was also used by Homer, Philoksenos of Kythera and Theokritos of Alexandria, was handled with a sarcastic and humorous approach in this work by Euripides.
In the conflict betweenOdysseus
and Polyphemus, the Odyssey, to which ironic references are often made, serves as a background model.
