Prepared by: Seval Şahin
Muallim Naci, to Mehmed Muzaffer Magazine It begins as a novel within a novel. But he doesn't know what to do. While talking about Seyh Galib and then Azade Galib, he includes a lot of information. It should not be forgotten that he was one of Ahmet Mithat's students. Then, he speaks from the mouth of a teacher to explain new literature and what is new in his generation, and then he tries to place both himself and Recaizade Ekrem in a place with two of this teacher's students. It gathers so many things together that the resulting compilation becomes impossible to put together. Who knows, maybe he cannot complete his work for this reason. He does not know how to assemble a work in which so many things are intertwined, and the novel is a genre he does not know. However, his work led to the emergence of an important novel in Turkish, Car Love.
This multi-part "treatise" is as much a literary discussion as it is a didactic treatise about the education and formation of a person through literature. The story part of the text is there only to support this treatise. The real importance of the text is that it bears witness to what kind of formation tool language and literature are. This testimony perhaps indicates that the intellectuals of the period felt the need to lean on their strongest tradition, the poetic tradition, while they were still forming their ideas about what liberal and secular education should be like. The indispensable condition for being an intellectual in the nineteenth century was neither philosophy, mathematics nor science; The first condition is a good poetry education.
This interesting text, with the foreword and editorship of Seval Şahin, makes a significant contribution to both the history of Turkish Literature and genre discussions.
