George Orwell, a writer whose understanding of literature can never be considered separate from his political thoughts and observations, in his essays collected in Why Am I Writing, explains the commonplace question "Why Am I Writing?", which almost every writer asks himself at some point in his life or is asked by others. He gives answers to the question based on political and humanitarian observations. While he exposes the politicians, disassembles the British character like a cadaver, and expresses the unspoken things about the war, he does not hesitate to put the needle on himself as much as on others.

"All writers are arrogant, selfish and lazy, and there is a mystery behind their urge to write. Writing a book is a terrible struggle that consumes a person like the long attacks of a painful disease. A person would definitely not attempt such a thing if he were not pushed by a demon that he cannot resist and cannot understand. We know that this demon exists in everyone, and that it is the same instinct that causes a baby to squeal for attention. But it is equally true that a person cannot write anything readable unless he constantly struggles to hide his personality.
