ODTÜ Tarih Direniyor
Why METU History? METU is a 60-year-old institution and has always been an oppositionist. But why is METU always in opposition? Wouldn't understanding how this tradition was fermented, how it sprouted and how it matured give some clues about the dilemmas of today's university education, today's Turkey and today's left opposition? Moreover, the periods when the strongest oppositional winds blew in METU were the periods when METU's scientific production was at its peak.
How did METU, which was founded as an American project, transform and become the next oppositionist? Why was THKO born in METU? Why could an organization like ÖTK exist only in METU? How was the coup period in the 1980s overcome, and how was METU able to renew itself? To what extent did the neoliberal atmosphere cause damage at METU? How did opposition continue during the AKP period?
It is an oral history study consisting of the memories and evaluations of approximately 100 METU academicians, employees and mainly students, who are the primary actors of the events, dating from the foundation in 1956 to the present day. The gripping events flow almost like a novel, adding many unknown dimensions and the human aspects of the actors. And the reader witnesses the formation of a tradition.
Some of the academics who participated in the study are as follows: Prof. Uğur Ersoy (vice rector during the founding period), Prof. Tosun Terzioğlu (Former Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and later former Rector of Sabancı University, passed away recently), Ahmet Acar (former Rector), Prof. Yakup Kepenek, Prof. Mehmet Kıcıman (former Rector), Prof. Mustafa Tokyay, Prof. Rashid Kaya.
