Stevenson's chilling story, set in the mountains in a remote corner of Spain, attracts attention with its themes of decaying aristocracy and tragic love, as well as its allusions to vampirehood. First published as a ghost story in The Court and Society Review at Christmas 1885, Olalla, like Dr. Like Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, it emerged from Stevenson's dreams. The author himself describes in one of his articles the difficulties he faced while transforming what he saw in his dreams into a traditional narrative.

A young Scottish officer, who was injured while fighting with the Spanish army during the Peninsular War (1808-1814), is placed as a boarder in the house of an impoverished noble family for a change of atmosphere after being treated in the hospital. There he will find himself in unimaginable events.

Olalla contains some features of gothic literature: The gloomy atmosphere created by Stevenson in the story set in a dilapidated mansion in the barren and mountainous lands where severe storms have thrown dust into dust, an extraordinarily beautiful young girl who retreats from the world to atone for the sins of her descendants, a cursed lineage, sadism... This magnificent story, which has been ignored since the date it was written, takes its place in the Modern Classics Series.
