Orestes - Hasan Ali Yücel Classics Book Description Euripides (c.484-406 BC): He has a special place as the artist whose most works have survived to the present day among the three great tragic poets raised by Athens. This feature is attributed to the fact that he was a more admired poet among the public, even though he did not win the first prize as much as Aeschylus and Sophocles at the festivals. Euripides' heroes have human weaknesses and flaws, and the tragedies they experience arise from these flaws and their passions that they cannot give up. Euripides can be considered the first of the classical or modern poets who produced works closest to contemporary theater. Orestes is the last tragedy performed in Athens around 408 BC. Its subject is almost the same as that of Aeschylus' play Eumenides. But everything is more realistic. Perfect heroes equipped with superhuman powers have no place in Euripides' works. The determination to defend ideals has turned into a struggle for survival. The sharp contrasts between the heroes reveal their characters as well as the moral values of the period.
