The Story of Pol Molla
Back Cover Article (From the Promotional Bulletin)
Mollazâde Mehmet Ali (Paul Mulla, the name he took after becoming a Christian), who belongs to a Cretan Muslim family, has an interesting and, in a way, exemplary, bitter life adventure. His father's side was in the 17th century. He came to Crete from Konya and settled in the century BC. His mother is of Albanian origin and came to the island from Egypt. The name Mehmet Ali comes from the Ottoman pasha of Albanian origin, Mehmet Ali Pasha, the founder of modern Egypt.
Pol Molla's father sent him to France for high school education in 1895. Since the situation on the island is quite complicated, he wants his son to receive a qualified education in better conditions. After high school in France, he studied law, was interested in philosophy, and met Maurice Blondel, the founder of action philosophy. While what was expected from him was to return to the island as a well-educated Muslim who had received Western culture, to defend his homeland in his own profession and to support his co-religionists, he chose to become a Christian and was baptized in 1905. Then a priest, then a seminar teacher at the church, finally a high-ranking cleric at the Vatican... The book you have in your hand tells this story using first-hand sources.
