Selahaddin Ayyubi (1138-1193), or Saladin, was born into an elite ruling Kurdish family in Mesopotamia and entered the army at the age of fourteen. He rose to power over the following years, eventually becoming sultan.
    Saladin's unwavering devotion to Islam encouraged him to spread the faith throughout his empire, which eventually stretched from Arabia to North Africa. After the capture of the Syrian fortresses of Damascus and Aleppo, he set out to conquer Jerusalem, a holy city for both Muslims and Christians, thus causing the Third Crusade (1187-1192).
    Although the family dynasty lasted only sixty years after his death, Saladin's stunning military victories and diplomatic successes against the West influenced Eastern rulers for centuries with his patriotism and fair practices.
