
History of Sinop
Very few studies have been done on the history of Sinop to date, and since the studies are limited to certain periods, there is no research and analysis work that can be considered as a basic reference source describing the history of Sinop from ancient times to the present. In current studies, the use of archival sources and primary sources is very limited. This study covers the history of Sinop; It covers the period from the entry into Turkish rule in 1214 to the declaration of the Republic in 1923. This work, which was written by examining the documents and all accessible sources, is a reference source for those who will research or wonder about the history of Sinop.
Sinop has had an important geographical and strategic location throughout history because it is located on the isthmus where the peninsula connects to the land. Its feature of being the only city with a natural harbor in the Black Sea, with its two deep harbors suitable for anchoring ships and protected against winds, has made Sinop important in almost every period of history in the northern region of Anatolia. Sinop, which has attracted people's attention since the early times due to its geographical location and natural harbor, has been a place where the first communities that came to the Black Sea coast and were more or less interested in maritime settled. The first settlements in Sinop date back to B.C. It has been revealed in archaeological excavations that it dates back to 5,500 BC. After the Turks entered Anatolia with the Manzikert Victory in 1071, Boyabat and Durağan, which are among the districts of Sinop today, were conquered in 1075 by Kara Tegin, one of the commanders of Danişment Gazi. In 1085, with the capture of Sinop city center by the Danişmends, the whole of Sinop came under Turkish rule.
In the History of Sinop, Sinop during the Seljuk, Principalities and Ottoman periods is discussed initially. Subsequently, the destructive activities of the Allied Powers and minorities in Sinop during the Armistice and War of Independence years, as well as the national activities in Sinop during the War of Independence years, are examined comprehensively.
