Is the sophist the evil other of the philosopher? The sophists, whom Hegel described as "the masters of Greece", were masters of language, in return for money, persuading the judges, changing the minds of the crowd they addressed, teaching people rhetoric and making them familiar with democracy. According to Plato, they were mind-bogglers who operated in the twilight of concepts, using the dialectical method to arrive at false suggestions. In the Sophist, Plato discusses the concepts of existence and non-existence and refutes Parmenides' theses. For Plato and Aristotle after him, the sophists draw the boundaries of philosophy from outside. While the philosopher strives to reach knowledge, the Sophist seeks to form opinions, that is, to engage in politics. It is important for the Sophist to understand the effect of words on existence and to use this. For this very reason, the method of the Sophists attracts the attention of modern Western philosophy, from Kant to Heidegger and Apel and even Lacan.
