Street Girl Maggie - A New York Story - Modern Classics 160 Book Description Stephen Crane, who is no stranger to the parts of New York that are the scene of robberies, murders, prostitution and where immigrants and the poor live, benefits from his own observations in Street Girl Maggie, which he published under the pen name Johnston Smith in 1893. Maggie, one of three children of an Irish immigrant family, left defenseless in the shadow of alcoholic parental violence and harsh street conditions, turns into a young woman who looks around with envy and wants to be loved, dreaming of a better life after her bad childhood. Crane, who describes the daily life and habits of the people left behind in the big city, presents us with a slice of New York at the time. When the author published her first book, Street Girl Maggie, at the age of 21, the extremely realistic and impressionistic work attracted the reaction of the readers. Today, it is considered the first example of Crane's works, which reveal that not only the environment in which people live but also human nature changes in an ever-growing city, and is the subject of many academic studies.
