
Taaşşuk-ı Talat and Fitnat-In Today's Turkish
The novel Taaşşuk-ı Talat ve Fitnat, which tells the tragic stories of Talat and Fitnat, who fall in love at first sight, deals with the relationships between men and women of the period and the problems arising from blind marriages. The author, who tells the stories of women of almost all ages and classes regarding their positions in family and society, does not stop there and tells their experiences by having Talat walk around the streets of Istanbul disguised as a woman.
Şemsettin Sami (1850-1904) Linguist, journalist, lexicographer, writer Şemsettin Sami was born in the town of Fraşer in the province of Ioannina. He began his education in Fraşer and continued at a Greek school in Ioannina. He learned Italian, Greek, Ancient Greek and French at this school, while also improving his Persian and Arabic with lessons from private tutors. In 1871, he went to Istanbul and joined the Press Office. Şemsettin Sami, who started his journalism career in Hadika in 1872, started publishing Taaşşuk-ı Talat ve Fitnat, which is considered the first copyrighted novel in our literature, in the same year. The newspapers Trablusgarp, Sabah, Tercüman-ı Şark and the magazines Aile and Hafta are his other important activities in the field of journalism and magazine publishing. He translated and published the plays İhtiyar Onbaşı and Galetée from French. Later, he wrote the play Besa yahut Ahde Vefa, which was staged in the Ottoman Theater. Seydi Yahya and Gâve are the author's other works in the theater genre. He brought important works such as Les Misérables and Robinson into our language. He wrote encyclopedic small books on a wide variety of subjects from mythology to women, from Islamic civilization to astronomy in the Cep Kütüphanesi series. In addition to all these works, Şemsettin Sami, who mainly focused on language, prepared two important dictionaries, Kamus-ı Fransevî (French to Turkish/Turkish to French dictionary) and Kamus-ı Türkî (Turkish dictionary), as well as the six-volume encyclopedia Kamusü'l-a'lâm. In the last years of his life, the author turned to researching the oldest works of Turkish and worked on the Orhun Inscriptions and Kutadgu Bilig. We will continue to include the works of Şemsettin Sami, who has made significant contributions to our cultural world with his linguistic studies, dictionary and encyclopedia writing, translations, novels and plays, in our Turkish Literature Classics Series.
